I have tried posting this twice at the AETV site, and twice it has been hijacked by trolls. Hopefully it will be the start of some kind of reasonable discussion on this site:
If EAR/ONS started off as VR, which many people think that he did, then he had some serious athletic ability. Especially in Visalia, it would be interesting to know who was in the sports teams at the high schools, particularly the athletics teams.
I also wonder what kind of sporting opportunities there were outside school for teenagers in Visalia in the 1970s. I'm thinking of things like running clubs, martial arts clubs and maybe even some kind of cycling group.
EAR/ONS was not only athletic, but was also likely a fan of being active and the outdoors, and people like that usually look for an outlet, and particularly as teenagers, are often encouraged to.
He may have become a loner as an adult, but generally speaking, kids and to some degree teenagers, cannot help but be around other people of the same age, as well as their families, and are not really encouraged to be spending too much time alone.

Track and field star? Hurdles? Or athletic training from the military? Seems things like jumping over walls would be a standard fitness test for the military? Recall that the Lemoore military base was less than an hour from Visalia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Air_Station_LemooreI get the "fan of being active and the outdoors", too (but why didn't he rape hikers in the woods then? No control?). One coincidence that I'll just get off my chest here is that "Kaweah" which is a street that the VR struck on no less than 6 times (including the shooting of Officer McGowen): www.ear-ons.com/crimes_VR.htmlis the ostensible recreation lake/area of that part of the San Joaquin valley and the start of the outdoors/wilderness area of Tulare County: maps.google.com/maps?q=Kaweah,+Three+Rivers,+CA&hl=en&ll=36.379279,-119.146042&spn=0.333906,0.837021&sll=37.269174,-119.306607&sspn=10.555651,26.784668&oq=kaweah&t=h&hnear=Kaweah,+Three+Rivers,+Tulare,+California&z=11

Lepke,
A lot of kids don't become loners as adults. That is something that starts from early on in their life. If they are excluded or exclude themselves, then this is a pattern that develops from a young / formative age.
We may have to accept the fact he is a psychotic who trained to achieve his goals (rape / murder).
In the 1970's there were very little physical sports outlets for youngsters. You can research online, but it is fairly evident that there were not these kind of avenues.

Greg, It seems that since GSK was obsessed with his life of crime, he would have little in common with regular people. I would imagine he would be somewhat paranoid about being discovered too. His inner hatred towards the world would probably make him not want to interact with the world. It seems like becoming a loner would be a natural outcome of his criminal activities and probably didn't have much interest in other things than his purient interests.
Also, someone thought to be EAR stated that he's been in and out of mental facilities all his life. That rings true to me but I must say ANYTHING he said I would take with a grain of salt. In other words maybe it's true, maybe it isn't. Personally, I think it more likely than not that his statement is true in this case.
I have had a couple of poi's -- one was rumored to have been a troubled youth and in a mental facility (Investigator Pool was interested in him and his brothers, but will not run DNA because he can find no criminal records on any of them). Where I am not clear is whether he would be able to find that record it the poi was a youth and the record expunged.
The other poi I located has a telephone number that when I called with the intention of asking him some questions that I thought he might be able to furnish about a possible schoolmate, (I hadn't really been interested in him) turned out to be an adult parole facility!!!! That shocked me and have mixed feelings. In one way I'm glad he didn't answer the phone. Kind of scared me. The woman who that answered the phone at the facility, although at first reluctant to help, when she found out I was working on a cold case went out of her way to help. But...she told me that there is no record of the person in question. I asked her if there would be a record if the case was 30 or more years old and she looked into it and said that no, there would not be a parole or even a court record of it.
Sorry my second paragraph got off topic, but my brain just led me and I followed. lol

I have a feeling that he was trying to get into professional sports as a player, trainer or coach.
It would have been good if LE had checked Janelle's neighbourhood to see if any person was staying in the neighbourhood short term to take part in sports tournaments in the area. But I am looking back in hindsight.

Samk, IIRC there was a huge sports event in Irvine that week. Hotels at the airport were offering discounts to teams staying from out of state. I have a theory that EAR was training when he saw Janelle. There's a cycling event today that runs, circling both Janelle's house and Manuella's home, I have no idea if it was in existence in the 1980's. Also, IIRC there was an event the week Manuella died.

I looked at this about two years ago. I don't want to name the events here but you are right there were several sports events taking place that week. The one that caught my attention was a tennis event.
