THIS IS A GREAT WEBSITE
The best I've ever seen for any type of true crime. VERY detailed and informative, great research! Bravo jjmcgr!
-I'm still up in there air re: the Goleta crimes. The timing makes perfect sense, the last known EAR attack was 6/25/79 and the first attempted Goleta abduction was 10/1/79. And the suspect seemingly continue to head south in his crimes (although there were random ones in Davis and back in Sac-Town here and there) Also I believe I there was some matches found from the Witthuhn crime scene and some of the Goleta murders. The killer also ate some of the victim's food in Goleta which was a common quirk of the EAR. The victims were shot but also bludgeoned.
On the other hand, there were NO rapes in Goleta. This is a big red flag for me. I can understand the first unsuccessful attack, the suspect had to abort and in the second crime with the doctor and psychologist, the detectives were able to conclude that the doctor likely broke free from his bindings and attacked the suspect which led to the suspect shooting him and then the gf. I can buy that. But there is NO reason for there not to have been a rape in the third Goleta attack, that one (as far as we can tell) went without problems. This just doesn't make sense. Guy is a serial rapist, if he was in Goleta, why no rapes? And another thing, how is it that he pulled off over 40 rapes successfully and in complete control but in his first two abductions in Goleta, he failed in 1 and lost control in attack 2? How was the doctor able to free himself when nobody else was in Sac-Town? It's funny that no articles mention the intricate diamond knot in the Goleta attacks. In one article one of the investigators in Goleta said there was DNA from one of the attacks and it didn't match the ONS/EAR DNA-linked crimes. jjmcgr, I read in one article that in one of the '81 attacks in Irvine (has to be Witthuhn) a man was seen running away with a white german shepherd dog. This is certainly incriminating re: him being the Goleta culprit. But there hasn't been any substantiating of this or of the DNA but for one article here and there. So it's hard to say. Like I said, I'm torn on the Goleta incidents. It would be very helpful if we could know for sure which can be attributed to the one linked by DNA.
-jjmcgr, in your linkingthe crimes data, you put down "Rape-Murders" and "2 rape-double murders" Can you clarify? I thought it was clear there was no rapes in Goleta?
-How could the authorities in Sac-Town dispose of all the evidence of the EAR? Shame on them! Even if the statute of limitations had run out (why is there a statute of limitations on crimes anyway?) preserving evidence could help figure out who this monster is and as we've seen, they are still interested in finding out who this guy was. Maybe they do have DNA and haven't released this but I doubt it. It's been over 30 years since the EAR struck in Sacramento, I doubt holding anything back is going to help catch this guy. What they should do is release the files (if they still have them) to investigators who are trying to solve this.
-Was the dishes trick used in the Contra Costa linked rapes? I believe so, even without DNA it's pretty obvious the EAR was the one who committed the linked crimes.
-The EAR-A and EAR-B theory is very compelling! It would help to have the case files for all these rapes so we could tell for sure what each situation was like and the MO, there is some info here on the board that was nicely organized.
-Then again, it's conceivable that the EAR first started with single woman homes, then moved on to couples when the authorities mentioned that no men were ever present.
-Why no info on the rapes before the first known EAR attack on 6/18/76? Could be very helpful info. I know the cops wanted to keep it under wraps at first.
-jjmcgr and others, do you think the Visalia Ransacker could've been the EAR? Were the burglaries there ones in which not much of value was taken? Very similar to the EAR, wouldn't be surprising if he started out as a petty burglar. But there was also a murder and an attempted assault of that teen-ager before her dad stepped in and was killed. Then on 12/10/75 the incident with the stakeout and the prowler walking right into the garage with the cops but he got away and shot at the cop hitting the flashlight. The timing here also makes sense. If this was the EAR, his first rape in Sac-Town was in 6/18/76 right?
-There was an article titled Police Debate Tie Between East Area Rapist, Killings in the Sacramento Bee on 3/13/80. This also happens to the day that the Smith murders occurred (either late 3/13/80 or early 3/14/80) Is it possible the murderer could've been sending a message, "YES IT'S ME" I don't know how far the Sacramento newspaper was readily available. It's doubtful but an interesting coincidence nontheless.
-I think the woman who reported that a prowler entered her backyard in San Ramon likely witnessed the EAR-ONS casing her home. The EAR was in Contra Costa County at the time and the physical description fit perfectly. Same with the overboard, clearly false, attempt at disguising his voice.
-I don't know why so many people think the EAR-ONS is either in prison or dead. It's definitely possible but not all serial offenders are unable to stop. The BTK Dennis Raider and the Green River Killer Gary Ridgway both stopped if I recall correctly.
-Do you guys think there's anything to the 4/16/78 revised composite sketch of the suspect in the Maggiore killings and and no subsequent EAR rapes in Sacramento ever? The last one was 4/14/78. Could the Maggiore killer be the EAR? Seems like an odd coincidence that the rapes stopped in that area after a revised picture of the Maggiore suspect was printed. The shoelaces found at the scene of where the two men seen running away from the shootings lends credence to it being the EAR who was the shooter. And if that was the EAR, then he has a willing accomplice in some way. A brother, cousin, friend perhaps was with him when the shooting occurred. Suppose we can positively identify the Maggiore killer as the EAR-ONS. How would our perception of the rest of his crimes (or crimes attributed to him by most law enforcement in the Unified Theory) change knowing there is at least one person, a man who's similar in age who knows that the EAR is at least a killer (and likely his other crimes too) and accompanied him on at least one attack.
This guy should've been caught...
