About a year ago I heard a semi-official rumor that there was a double-homicide in Contra Costa County which was linked by DNA to the Southern California DNA murders.
Since then, I've heard nothing. Has anyone else ever heard about this? I do not know the timeframe, location, etc.
This would be significant as the cases in CCC currently linked are home invasion-rapes. When this happened could change perspectives on the case. After 1986 or during the period 1981-86 could mean the killer moved back to the SF area. If it happened around the time of the CCC rapes, this would be the killer's first murders and it would be interesting to see how the crime was executed, particularly vis-a-vis the Ventura murders. For instance, were the victims bludgeoned or otherwise executed?

I'd look in the SF papers and the Contra Costa Times. All I know is that a couple was supposedly murdered in a home invasion somewhere in CCC. It's probably a bogus rumor because the DNA link should have been big news.

I was going through Google stories trying to find out about this double homicide and found something that stopped me in my tracks. It referred to letters people had sent to a newspaper complaining about a story on the EAR ("a small but fervent number of readers have told me they objected to the story" and "The thing had died down. It should have remained a dead issue."). WHAT???
Do any of the victims of the EAR feel this way? The piece says many of the victims feel gratitude towards the detective mentioned for still working on the cases; what about the rest of them? It never occurred to me that they all wouldn't want to find this guy, but if the victims wanted to let it go I'd have to look at this from a different perspective. - 2Kay20

2Kay20, I know the article you are referring to- it appeared in the Sac Bee. The best way I can answer your question is to refer you to the work done by Bruce Harrington to promote prison DNA collection and his quest to resolve his brothers murder. Not everyone wants this case swept under the carpet.
JJ:
I will continue to look for 1981-86 murders with a bludgeon MO in other places. LE might not necessarily divulge alot of new information on an active case beyond the initial DNA matching of some of the crimes. For all we know, they may have already matched some Sac Ears crimes to Irvine.

That is correct, it was comments made to the Bee after they ran an article on EAR. I'm almost ashamed to admit that I am a native Sacramentan. One would be wise to question the motives of people who said such things.
As to him doing other 187's, even if it is only one perp fits all, I think it is ludicrous to assume that they have them all. For starters, how about looking down the Central Coast? I was reading an article where I believe it was Santa Cruz County saying that they have 130 unsolveds on their books.
Port, as to that one I mentioned, nothing new yet. But I was talking to someone in a chat room the other night and described the case to him. This person replied that if that's where it was, it was him. He was the territorial type.
Of course this person has said some funny things in the past. Like that Zelms was taken out in that phony robbery because he was calling Foulkes a liar in regards to what they saw the night of the Stine killing.
And this person once said to me in private that he has family that was in LE here in California, and that one of them thinks that our guy was also. And that some good ones took care of the problem back in the early 90's.
Some people have a very active imagination....You oughtta see the Cabin 28 case. There's a new script at least every month in that one.

ND:
Yes, I won't be surprised if other crimes turn up in other places for our roving creep. Are you referring to Stine the Zodiac victim? I don't know anything about the robbery. I used to think there was a possibility that Ears ONs could have been former LE, but ever since I came across the Reno Gazette article that said he called LE pigs I am not so sure.
JJ, You and Arch have done an excellent job of cataloging articles and documents regarding this case. I constantly refer back to these documents, because most news articles contain a grain, if not more, of truth. The Cason series is exemplary reporting. I try to post any new articles I encounter on the board.
