by the way, in one of the articles (which is pay-per-view via LAT), there were (only) 750 crop dusting pilots in CA as of 1966:
Add some modest growth to that number and divide in half for North vs South CA, and you got a nice little group of <1000 people (I'm not being facetious).

albion ...
If I understand you correctly, you're suggesting that EAR may have been in the crop dusting business, which would account for a number of factors that you identify in message on page 2.
Two of those items you list leave me wondering ...
item 4: could have hauled around a bicycle on crop duster. Probably true, but he could have hauled around a bike in a van, too.
item 8: "lots of hours in the air"; when would he have had time to do all that reconnaissance? If crop dusting was an on-again off-again business, then that might nullify this concern, since the business would be part-time.
A crop duster seems a bit of a stretch because of its apparent complexity compared to alternate ideas. EAR using a van would accomplish same objective and would have been much simpler. But you could be right.

I stand corrected. A pic of a heli crop dusting Irvine in '78 and also a lit "curio" of OC aeronautical history from '87:

Combining the Drifter's note on recon, I'm gonna pitch my 2 cents as being a helicopter cropduster. I think a heli gives someone a better means of scouting an area than an airplane. It also satisfies my mental hurdle with seeing a crop dusting plane in OC, just due to the obstacles (as opposed to the Central Valley where things are flatter).

As Albion says in the post above, I have been looking at cycling and MAY have found a tiny piece of the puzzle. I don't know how it fits in with all the other theories and info yet, but I think it has a place. I'm waiting on Guessting giving me her opinion on it before I post it here. Until G returns I'm holding back for a while, but it will be posted at some stage.

Gosh Geko, now I really feel the pressure. My face is all hot and I feel sick, just joshin with ya! we are still looking at it. I believe it is possible but just not sure enough to validate anything at this point. I am waiting on those with better eyes, brains, ears, and just about everything else better than I. I sure thank you for your confidence and I even more so hope I do not let you down my friend. g

Hi Albion, Being new to this board & sick of the other one, I don't have much knowledge on any of this, but one thing piqued my interest in your above post. Would you mind addressing the "creative accounting that was discovered" as you mentioned on July 3rd? Thank you, 222Urit
